Press Release: PIP breast implants: a worrying trend warns National Accident Helpline

National Accident Helpline is urging people who are thinking about having cosmetic surgery to think carefully.
The recent news around PIP breast implants rupturing and leaking industrial silicone has seen a rise in the number of concerned individuals contacting National Accident Helpline in recent weeks.
It is reported that there are around 100,000 cosmetic operations in the UK each year however; it’s not just women seeking the ‘perfect body’, cancer patients in need of breast reconstruction also undertake surgery.
Beth Powell, National Accident Helpline consumer director, said: “It’s dreadful to hear that industrial silicone is being used in certain breast implants and let’s not forget that cosmetic surgery isn’t just for those seeking the perfect body. People seek help for conditions they have had since birth and disfigurements following accidents, as well as cancer patients who require breast reconstruction after surgery.
“People who are considering cosmetic surgery need to ensure that they fully understand the health issues that could follow, otherwise they could find themselves left with scarring, swelling, infections and nerve damage. People need to check that they are using a reputable and experienced clinic with suitable aftercare.”
Last year the National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death found that out of 100,000 cosmetic operations carried out each year, nearly half of the operating theatres in use were not properly equipped and almost a fifth had no emergency re-admission policy.
