Industry News: Paralysed girl wins £17.5m
A schoolgirl who was left paralysed after a car accident has been awarded £17.5 million in compensation.
Former football player Chrissie Johnson, now 20, was awarded the record personal injury payout at the High Court in London.
Miss Johnson was just 16 at the time of the accident in 2006, in which she sustained brain damage when the car she was travelling in collided with a lorry in Essex. She is now fully dependent on nursing care and confined to a wheelchair for life.
Approving the settlement, Mrs Justice Swift said: "No amount of money can redress the damage that was caused, but what it can do is improve the quality of life of Chrissie, improve the prospects of maximising her potential and make life that little bit easier for her family, allowing them to live as normal a life as possible.
"I wish Chrissie, who I am delighted to see in court today, the very best for the future and hope she and her family can be happy in their new home."
Miss Johnson’s mother, Gina Smith, said: "I am grateful that my daughter has financial security for the rest of her life, but I would of course happily give all this up and more to have my beautiful, smiling angel back to the person she was before this tragedy."
