Industry News: New proposals aim to reduce dog attacks
New plans to tackle dangerous dog breeds could mean that owners would need to be insured against dog attack compensation claims.
In addition to this measure, the proposals would give police and local authorities the power to force owners to muzzle or neuter their potentially dangerous dogs.
The move is hoped to reduce the numbers of dog attacks in the UK - every week, more than 100 people suffer injuries so severe from a dog attack that they are admitted into hospital.
The new proposals also follow a rise in levels of dog fighting and illegal ownership, particularly by gang members who reportedly use dangerous dogs as intimidating status symbols.
Environment Secretary Hilary Benn said: 'There is a lot of public concern about dog attacks, including the recent tragic deaths of young children, and about the rise in the number of so-called status dogs used to intimidate or threaten people.
'This is a serious issue of public safety. The government wants to hear what people think about the law as it stands and what more we might do to protect people from dangerous dogs.'
