Press Release: Break the injury cycle, says National Accident Helpline
National Accident Helpline is urging cyclists and other road users to take extra care with road safety, now that the improving weather is seeing an increasing number of people take to their bikes, often for the first time in months.
National Bike Week (19th – 26th June) will raise the profile of cycling and encourage greater interest.
A thousand cyclists a year contact National Accident Helpline with injuries and accidents ranging from cuts and bruises to broken bones and serious, potentially life-changing, injuries. These are often caused by cars overtaking or pulling out from the left, potholes or obstructions in the road.
Beth Powell, consumer director of National Accident Helpline said: “It is tragic that a healthy way of commuting or enjoying the fresh air results in accidents and even fatalities.
“Watching your speed, planning your route in advance, and wearing reflective clothing can make cycling a safer experience. If it has been a long time since you were last on a bike, check your bike’s road worthiness and build your confidence by practising on quiet roads. The majority of cycling victims who approach us do so after accidents involving motorists, so motorists need to share the road and remember the mirror – signal – manoeuvre routine.”
