What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer most often caused by exposure to asbestos, usually through inhalation of the toxic chemical. Asbestos occurs naturally, and was introduced into industry and home use because of its fire, electrical and chemical resistance, as well as being a good sound absorber. This made it popular for many practical home and industrial uses, including building insulation – which is one of the largest causes of asbestosis and mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that resides mainly around the lungs, but can occur in other organs too. The cancer attacks the cells surrounding these organs, which leads to chest pain and further serious complications.

Symptoms of Mesothelioma

Symptoms of this form of asbestos cancer often don’t appear until 20 to 50 years after exposure; and can involve coughing, shortness of breath and chest pain. Fatigue and weight loss are other signs that you might have mesothelioma.

In more serious situations, mesothelioma can lead to tumours, blood clots, and pneumothoraxs (collapsed lungs), as well as spreading to other areas of the body, including the heart.

Because asbestos has a history of being used in industry, mesothelioma is often a work related cancer, although the asbestos fibres can, in some cases, spread to family members. This means that workers and family members are unknowingly exposed – and this forms the basis for a mesothelioma compensation claim.

Asbestos use as an insulator also means that many schools, work places and homes run the risk of exposing people to the fibres and, in these cases, mesothelioma compensation could be paid out.

Diagnosing mesothelioma involves X-rays and CT scans – although diagnosis can prove difficult as symptoms can often point towards other causes.
