What is tetraplegia and paraplegia?
Tetraplegia, also sometimes known as quadriplegia, is paralysis in the arms as well as the legs. This condition is caused by damage high up on the spinal cord, which means that the signals from the brain to the body are restricted.
Tetraplegia can also affect the abdominal and chest muscles which can cause difficulty breathing.
Paraplegia is caused by damage further down the spinal cord. This causes leg movement to be either impaired or lost completely. In contrast to tetraplegics, paraplegics can move their arms and hands.
Many people think that paraplegia is total loss of feeling and movement in the legs, but this is not true. Paraplegia can vary from slight loss of leg movement, to full paralysis of the legs, right the way up to the chest.

Causes of tetraplegia and paraplegia
Tetraplegia and Paraplegia are both caused by spinal cord injuries. However, tetraplegia is particularly associated with neck injuries where the bone is broken in the cervical (neck) region of the spine, causing damage to the spinal cord.
