What is mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer most often caused by exposure to asbestos, usually through breathing in the toxic chemical.

Asbestos occurs naturally and was introduced into industry and home use because of its properties.

Asbestos is resistant to fire, electricity and chemicals, as well as being a good sound absorber. This made it popular for many home and industrial uses, including building insulation.

It was only after many years of asbestos being used in these ways way that the dangers to humans became widely recognised.

Mesothelioma forms around your lungs, but can affect other organs, too. The cancer attacks the cells around these organs. This leads to chest pain and other serious complications.

Symptoms of mesothelioma

Symptoms of this form of asbestos cancer often don’t appear until 20 to 50 years after exposure. They can include:

  • Coughing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Fatigue
  • Weight loss

Mesothelioma sufferers may experience tumours, blood clots and pneumothoraces (collapsed lungs). The disease can also spread to other areas of the body, including the heart.

Because asbestos has a history of being used in industry, mesothelioma is often a work related cancer, although the asbestos fibres can, in some cases, spread to family members.

This means that workers and family members are unknowingly exposed to the harmful effects of asbestos – and this forms the basis for a mesothelioma compensation claim.

Asbestos used as an insulator also means that many schools, work places and homes run the risk of exposing people to the fibres and, in these cases, mesothelioma compensation could be paid out.

Diagnosing mesothelioma involves X-rays and CT scans – although diagnosis can prove difficult as symptoms can often point towards other causes.

The Mesothelioma Bill

In the past, sufferers of mesothelioma have been unable to claim if they could not locate their previous employer or their insurers. Because of this, the Mesothelioma Bill was introduced.

Announced during the Queen’s Speech in 2013, the bill ensures that victims of mesothelioma can claim compensation even when no employer or insurer can be traced.

The Mesothelioma Bill provides an opportunity for those suffering mesothelioma to claim the compensation they deserve.
