As people look for quicker, more convenient and environmentally friendly ways to travel, particularly around big, congested cities and towns, electric scooters - commonly known as e-scooters - are becoming a popular choice.

As the number of e-scooters on the roads increases, so does the potential for accidents involving them. According to government data, there were 1,280 accidents involving e-scooters in 2021, up from 460 in 2020.

E-scooter accidents, like all types of road traffic accidents, can result in serious injury and trauma to the rider and other road users, while there is a risk of pedestrian accidents involving e-scooters too.

Concerned about e-scooters?

Over 70% of people we asked are, believing that people should have a driving licence to ride an e-scooter on public roads. We agree, and believe laws should be introduced to make e-scooters safe too. Until then, be assured that, if you're in an e-scooter accident that wasn't your fault, we're here to help you #ClaimWithConfidence.

What types of e-scooter accidents are there?

Since the government started e-scooter trials in July 2020, fast-tracking the use of rental e-scooters in the UK, there has been a rise in e scooter accidents, which in some cases have sadly resulted in fatal injuries.

Such accidents include those caused by poorly maintained and defective roads, or negligent riding; accidents involving cars, motorcycles, cycles or other vehicles; and collisions with pedestrians. Some e-scooters can travel at speeds in excess of 30 mph, so hitting a pothole or crack in the road, another vehicle or a pedestrian can have serious consequences.

Like other forms of motorised transport, e-scooters are dangerous when used incorrectly or irresponsibly. Ridden recklessly, without due care and attention, or at high speed, e-scooters have the potential to present serious dangers to their rider, other road users and pedestrians. The dangers of e-scooters include risk of damage to public and/or personal property and injury to the rider and/or other road users and pedestrians such as:

And unfortunately, while e-scooters are regulated by the same laws as cars and other vehicles, riders are required to have a driving licence, and only insured, rented e-scooters are legal on public roads, examples of such recklessness - and the e-scooter danger it presents - are becoming more common.
