National Accident Helpline (NAH) has partnered with George's Car Media (GCM) for a powerful new December Drink Driving Campaign aimed at challenging traditional messages around alcohol and driving.
The campaign's point-of-view video, which went live on YouTube on Wednesday 17 December, takes a fresh approach to drink driving awareness. Rather than focus solely on the familiar message of not driving immediately after drinking, the film — featuring GCM founder George — highlights a lesser-spoken risk: getting behind the wheel the morning after, when alcohol may still be in your system.
In the video, the protagonist makes all the right decisions after a night out — taking a taxi home, staying hydrated, and sleeping safely — only to wake the next day and mistakenly drive while still impaired. The storyline vividly illustrates how easily alcohol can linger and impact driving, even when someone believes they are safe.
National Accident Helpline chose to partner with George's Car Media to help prevent needless casualties on UK roads this festive season and beyond. Raising awareness of risks and campaigning for change lies at the core of NAH's mission to support safer roads and help people injured through no fault of their own get their lives back on track.
The facts & stats:
- Alcohol leaves your body at a rate of around one unit per hour, starting 30 minutes after your last drink.
- Sleep, food, and hydration do not speed up the process of alcohol leaving your body.
- Around 1 in 5 drivers caught drink-driving are stopped the morning after.
- Recent official data shows around 260 fatalities from drink-drive collisions in Britain each year.
Why this message matters
George, founder of George's Car Media, said:
“Having personally lost friends to drink driving, this is an issue that's very close to home for me. I wanted to create something that genuinely resonates with people who consume content on social media, not just repeating ‘don't drink and drive', but highlighting the lesser-spoken-about risks too, such as driving the morning after. Those grey areas are often where people make dangerous decisions, and that's exactly what we wanted to challenge.”
“Quite simply, if even one person watches this and decides not to get behind the wheel after drinking, then it's been worth it. Every single person matters, and no one should lose their life, freedom, or future because of a preventable decision. If this video helps stop that from happening, then it's done its job.”
William Carver, videographer, added:
“Everyone knows drink driving is unacceptable, but what many don't realise is that it can happen without intention. Raising awareness around the hidden risks, like still being over the limit the next morning, is absolutely vital. For me, if this video can reach just one person and help them make a safer choice, then it's already made an impact worthwhile.”
Owen Messenger, Road Casualty Reduction Team Sergeant at Devon & Cornwall Policing, explains:
“Many people do not understand how long it takes for alcohol to clear your body, so it was important for us to highlight the issues with driving the morning after. Many drivers are caught driving over the prescribed limit in the morning because they have not given it enough time. Sleep, hydration, coffee, bread etc. will not speed up the process. Everybody knows that they shouldn't drink and drive yet still, a significant proportion of fatal collisions are directly attributed to alcohol. Most people only associate drink driving with the actual time they are drinking and do not realise that they could still be impaired some considerable time after, despite doing what they think are the right things. Hopefully this video will highlight the dangers of morning after drink driving and the importance of allowing enough time for alcohol to clear your body.”
Helping you stay safe and informed
This campaign complements ongoing efforts to improve road safety in the UK. Recent research by National Accident Helplinelink highlights how overconfidence on the roads, including misunderstandings around risk and capability, continues to contribute to collisions and fatalities.
John Kushnick, Legal Operations Director at National Accident Law, says “This is a brilliant video and so vital as most people simply do not think about the risks of driving the day after the night before. Drivers must stay informed, realistic, and cautious to protect themselves and others.”
Drinkdriving.org shares that “The only 100% safe alcohol driving limit is 0”. They offer a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) Calculator, created for educational purposes only.
